How to Pick the Perfect Leash: Long Dog Leashes vs. Short Dog Leashes

Big dog, small dog, medium dog - you'll need a leash to train and walk your dog. Today, we'll break down long dog leashes and short dog leashes and their respective benefits.

Benefits of Long Dog Leashes

Long dog leashes are generally 15 feet or longer and give your dog so much more freedom to explore the Great Outdoors while keeping him securely attached to you. This is how they can be so great for such activities as hiking, trips to the park, or exploring an open area. The long dog leads come in very handy during recall training, where your canine learns to return to you upon being called, no matter the distance. Added length allows them to roam while you remain in control of them.

Long dog leashes go well with high-energy dogs or breeds that require wide-open spaces, such as Border Collies, Retrievers, and other working breeds. These dogs often need more room to move and explore, and a long leash gives them flexibility while keeping them safe in less confined places.

The Benefits of Short Dog Leashes

Short dog leashes come into play where one requires more control. Usually, 4 to 6 feet in length, these are ideal for walks around crowded areas or busy sidewalks and for training your dog to walk nicely on a leash-so-called "heel." Short leashes provide better communication and quicker response times, which is good for teaching basic commands and keeping close if your dog becomes too distracted.

For dogs that are still in training and who don't have very good leash manners, or for young puppies just beginning a training program, it's essential to have a short leash. They're also very convenient with small dogs, or dogs for which you don't need a great deal of length.

Which Leash is Right for Your Dog?

Both long and short dog leashes have a place in your dog training toolkit. It depends on your dog's temperament and where you'll both be walking. Whether you are out for an adventure or taking a casual stroll around the block in your neighborhood, having the right leash makes all the difference.
